You can probably get all of the pads, leads, bass sounds, arpeggiated patterns, and evolving textures and motion you'd ever need out of those. And there are hundreds of third-party VSTs and AUs (both free and paid) that will give you most of the same sounds as well, albeit with different and original interfaces that don't necessarily correspond to any one particular vintage synth.Merely a couple of months after taking advantage of a deal on Arturia’s V-Collection 3, the company has released an upgrade to the vintage suite with an additional four instruments - taking the collection to 13 instruments and 6000 keyboard sounds. Nearly all of today's digital audio workstations come with their own synthesizer plug-ins built in, and many of them already sound good.

Yet, as powerful as Arturia V Collection 4 is, in 2015 you almost don't need it. Some of the plug-ins in the collection have been around individually for years now, but they sounded great then and still sound great now. And as before, you get emulations of the Minimoog, the Moog Modular, the Yamaha CS-80, the Roland Jupiter-8, the ARP 2600, and the Sequential Circuits Prophet V, as well as Wurlitzer and Arp/Eminent Solina string machine reproductions.Īs you can expect, all of the included plug-ins sound amazing and, at least to my ears, authentic. So to have it here in this collection is astounding. It was never inexpensive to begin with, and often went for several thousand dollars on the used market even before analog synth prices started going through the roof. You could start and end here if you wanted, but you'd be missing out on what made each individual synth great.įor the Collection 4, Arturia has added the Oberheim Matrix 12, which has always been something of a holy grail for analog synth enthusiasts. Before I even dove into the individual plug-ins, I got lost in Analog Lab for hours, thanks to its incredibly inspiring array of sounds.

There's also a new drum module that's packed with 170 drum kits full of samples drawn from classic machines of years past. And you get Analog Lab, which packages all of this together with over 6,000 preset sounds drawing from all of the instruments included in the collection. To think that today, you can get over a dozen classic synths and other instruments in a single software package, and create as many instances of them as your computer's processor allows, is mind boggling. And if you could get a hold of a real analog synth or two-say, a JUNO 106 and a Minimoog-the sky was the limit with what you could create.
